When you should use this chart

• Like a dot or range plot, but symbols mark the values instead of plain dots – e.g. figures for male/female, icons for different categories or groups
• Makes it instantly clear which group a value belongs to, without necessarily needing color or a legend
• Proven for comparisons between two or more clearly distinct groups per category – e.g. pay differences by gender per industry, or results by age group per region
• Stronger than a plain dot plot when group membership is itself part of the message: the symbol carries the information rather than relying solely on color coding
